LAG (Loose-Aggressive)

In poker terminology, LAG stands for "Loose Aggressive" — a style of play characterized by playing a wider range of hands more aggressively than the average player. A LAG player plays a lot of hands and isn't afraid to bet and raise frequently, often putting their opponents under pressure.

What is a LAG?

When playing poker, it's crucial to understand different player types and how their strategies vary. One classic player-type is the Loose Aggressive or LAG player. This is a player who plays a lot of hands preflop and rarely folds (this is the loose part). They also tends to bet and raise (as oppose to call and fold) more frequently than the average player (this is the aggressive part).

A LAG strategy can be effective in both cash games and tournaments, across all poker variants, especially in games where players are overly tight. The aggressive betting style often forces opponents to make mistakes, while the wide range of hands they play can make a LAG player unpredictable.

However, the LAG style also carries risks. To make it work requires a deep understanding of poker strategy and a good read on opponents. Without these, a LAG player can end up losing their chips very quickly.

Example of a LAG

Let's say you're playing a game of Texas Hold'em. A player to your left has been involved in half of the hands since you sat down and only every raises, re-raises, or folds (no calls). They aren't waiting for premium hands; they're betting (and I do mean betting) with a wide range of cards. This player is implementing a LAG strategy.
