Introduction to Hold'em
Hold'em, or Texas Hold'em , is a game that's a part of the family of card games known as poker. It's a game that requires strategy and skill, and it's played in a variety of formats, including cash games and tournaments. The objective of the game is to win the pot - the sum of bets made by all players in a hand. It's by far the most popular form of poker, played worldwide by millions of players.
How to Play Hold'em
A hand of Hold'em starts with each player being dealt two private cards face down. These are known as your 'hole cards' or 'pocket cards' . Then, five community cards are dealt face up on the "board". The players can make their five-card poker hand using any combination of their two hole cards and the five community cards.
The five community cards are dealt intermittently in three part. Firstly, three cards are dealt as a flop. Then a round of betting takes place before one card is dealt again - called the turn. Another round of betting takes place before the final 'river' card is dealt and a final round of betting commences.
Example of "Hold'em"
Player A is dealt A-K and Player B is dealt J-J. The board comes up J-K-10-4-2. Player B has a set of Jacks while Player A has a pair of Kings. Player B wins the hand.
Player A is dealt 9-9 and Player B is dealt A-Q. The board comes up A-9-2-7-5. Player A has three of a kind (a set of Nines) while Player B has a pair of Aces. Player A wins the hand.
Player A is dealt Q-J and Player B is dealt 10-9. The board comes up K-A-10-5-4. Neither player has a pair, so the player with the highest card, Player B with an Ace, wins the hand.
